The ball rollback
Distance is still climbing. The governing bodies paused the 2028/2030 ball-test plan in 2026 and reopened elite-only options. The names below have been on the record for years. The graphic is the part you can hold.
From 2023 through early 2026 the USGA and R&A pushed an Overall Distance Standard change aimed at a shorter elite ball, first on a two-date calendar (2028 tour / 2030 everyone) and then on a single January 2030 date. In June 2026 they stood with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour and said the ODS path is on hold through 2030 while they test options that actually move elite distance — including model local rules that would split tour equipment from the recreational aisle. That is the live argument: one ball for the whole game, or a shorter ball (and maybe a quieter driver) only where 320-yard carries are eating classic courses.

Classic courses are being stretched or retired as exam sites. Nicklaus has said for decades that the current reduction talk is too small. Woods and McIlroy have publicly backed the governing bodies on distance even when locker-room temperature ran the other way. The USGA and R&A argument is institutional: if elite distance keeps rising, shotmaking collapses into driver-wedge and Open rota venues become theme parks.

Distance is a skill, not a glitch. Bombers treat speed as trained athletic output. A large share of PGA Tour players spent 2024–2025 opposing a rollback that would force a second ball inventory mid-career. Manufacturers argued a universal ODS change hits the recreational aisle for a tour problem, kills R&D, and does not fix agronomy or course setup. Club operators do not want two-ball retail or a weekend player who thinks the game just got longer.

June 16, 2026: all four signed that distance is still rising, that the updated ODS may not deliver, and that they will take time to test alternatives with a meaningful elite effect. Mark Darbon later said model local rules — bifurcation — are back in the conversation. Implementation of the old ball-test path is paused through January 2030. The product question for this desk is not moral. It is: which number actually moves, on which tees, in which year.
